what is "found poetry"?
Excellent question. Simply put, "Found Poetry" is a poem you create using existing text...in the case, The Giver. (or, if you're reading companion books, you may use one of those)
Here are the steps:
1. Select a theme from the book (e.g. Sameness, Family, Love, Memories, etc.)
2. Using that theme, select text/phrases from the book that "fit" that theme (you're going to write a 16-line poem, so make sure you have enough text)
3. Re-arrange, edit the phrases until you create a poem that illustrates your theme (you do not have to cite the page numbers in your poem, but they're good to have while creating your draft so you can go back and reference text if need be)
4. Type up your poem in a NEW document
5. Give it a title
6. Share with me
Remember:
- You may only use text from the book - no adding words
- You MAY add punctuation to create/enhance a mood
- This is POETRY - play with line breaks, font use
- Read it out loud before you turn in your final
We will work on these together during our discussion times on Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday. Let's create! I'm going to write one, too.
